Tragic Cape Coral Accident Highlights Dangers of Biking at Night

A Florida bicyclist was severely injured last month when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a Cape Coral resident. An investigation into the cause of the Florida bicycle accident revealed that the bike was not equipped with front and rear lamps, as required when operating on the roadway after sunset.

This tragic Florida bicycle accident highlights the importance of bicycle safety, particularly when riding at night. Many Florida bicycle accidents happen during dusk or at night, due to traffic congestion and poor overall visibility.

Therefore, if you choose to bike at night, we recommend you keep these safety tips in mind:

  •  Be sure your bike has reflectors. Each bike should have front and rear reflectors, pedal reflectors, and side rim or wheel reflectors.
  •  Use front and rear lights to help make your bicycle more noticeable to cars at night. Small battery-operated lamps strapped to your legs also help.
  •  Wear reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to automobile drivers. Wear a reflective vest, reflective bands on arms and legs, and reflective tape on helmet.
  •  Always wear a good helmet with a rigid (but crushable) interior material, which may help absorb the force of an impact.
  •  Never allow children to ride at night.

Avoid riding on dark, narrow roadways where the posted speed limit is more than 35 mph.

The Dellutri Law Group is focused on making bad situations better and putting lives back together. If you or someone you love has been seriously injured in a Florida bicycle accident caused by someone else's negligence, you may be entitled to compensation.

Employee Spotlight

Ashley Griffith

I started working at the Dellutri Law Group in March of 2008. I was initially hired to scan and close files but after I mastered that so easily they knew I was capable of taking on other tasks. I transitioned to opening all of the new cases for the firm and recently I have begun to process all of the chapter 13 bankruptcy files and prepare them for the 341 meeting. I send all necessary information to the trustee. I also tackle a list of various other tasks throughout the office. They like to call me the "go to girl".

My experience with this firm has been wonderful. Everyone helps out when you are in need of help. I like what I do because everything is hands on. There is never a dull moment there is always something to do. When a client comes to our office and meets with an attorney we hope they can see and feel that we truly love what we do.

I enjoy working with Carmen Dellutri, I have never worked for someone that has been so dedicated and involved in his work & the community. With all of the different events to better the world around us from the Beach Clean-Up & Adopt A Road, to raising money for Breast Cancer Research or Toys for Tots there is always something to look forward to. I will try to follow in his footsteps. Sometimes it is the little things you do along the way that make a big difference. I can honestly say I look forward to working here in the future and I can't wait to see what Carmen comes up with next.

Carmen's Note

Did you ever see a dog chase their tail?  I always wondered: why would a dog act this way?  What is the purpose?  What is the goal?  When you play with a dog, you throw the ball they run after it, bring it back and chase it again.  This I understand.  The goal is to retrieve the ball and play again.  But, what happens when the dog catches their tail?  While funny to watch, I wondered if we, as humans don't do the same thing.

Are we all just trying to catch our tails in today's society?  Are we all just running in circles because we don't have a plan or a goal?  Do we understand why we need goals and plans?  Sure, it is easy to sit back and continue to do the same things we did yesterday because those things are within our comfort zone.  Goals make you step outside of your comfort zone and start to analyze your life, circumstances and the future.

In last month's note, I challenged everyone to set financial goals?  Did you read the note?  Did you act upon it?  Did you look on the internet for an article about financial goals for 2012?  I did.  I am not a financial guru, but I am smart enough to know that I cannot rely on anyone else to take care of me in the future.  I need to take action today to protect my family and myself in the future.  Sure these are uncertain times and money is tight.  Imagine how tight it will be in the future when prices will surely be higher, taxes will probably be higher, costs of living will surely be higher, etc, etc.

The purpose of this note is not to scare you, but to point out that each day is an opportunity to begin life all over again.  We can do something each and everyday that will help us reach our goals and change our lives for the better.  What are you going to do today?

Recipe of the Month

Pasta and Bean Soup with Sausage

Ingredients

6 oz. dried cannellini beans (1 cup)

1  head of garlic plus 1 garlic clove 2 sprigs fresh thyme, rosemary or sage

7 oz. thick-cut pancetta, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

5 1/2 oz. sweet Italian sausage, removed from casing,

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil plus more for drizzling

4 cups vegetable broth

8 ounces ditaloni rigati

Fine sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper

2 tbsp. finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

Instructions

Rinse beans, then place with head of garlic and herb sprigs in a large saucepan and cover with water by 3 inches. Soak for 8 hours, or overnight.

Place saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a low boil; reduce to a gentle simmer and cook, adding water as necessary to keep level 2 to 3 inches above beans, until beans are tender, about 45 minutes or more (cooking time varies depending on age of beans).

Reserving cooking liquid, drain beans through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl; discard garlic and herb sprigs. Separately, set aside beans and their liquid.

Finely chop remaining garlic clove. In a large heavy pot with lid or Dutch oven, combine pancetta and sausage; heat over medium-high heat, stirring frequently and breaking up sausage into bits with a wooden spoon, until fat is rendered and sausage is cooked through, about 7 minutes. Add onion and oil, reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring frequently, until onion is softened, about 5 minutes. Add chopped garlic and cook 2 minutes more. Add reserved beans, 2 cups bean cooking liquid, broth and 2 1/4 cups water; bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 25 minutes.

Increase heat to bring soup to a low boil; add pasta and cook until pasta is just al dente (pasta will continue to cook in soup; do not overcook). Season with salt and pepper to taste (soup can be thinned, if desired, using remaining bean cooking liquid). Ladle soup into serving bowls; sprinkle with parsley and drizzle with oil.

Beach Clean-Up Day

Let's go to the beach for a good cause! Not only do you get to have fun in the sun, but you also get the satisfaction of helping the environment. Why not join in on all the fun and bring your family and/or friends and let's work together to make Fort Myers Beach beautiful! It is very important that we remember to keep our beaches clean by throwing away any unnecessary trash. Litter that is not properly discarded injures and kills fish, seabirds, and marine mammals. Ocean litter is becoming a critical problem worldwide and helping prevent it is our responsibility.

Don't forget to contact our office to sign up! We look forward to seeing you Sunday, February 12, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Please give Elizabeth a call to sign up.
