Man’s best friend has an ugly side. More than 4.7 million Americans suffer dog bite injuries each year. Florida sees some of the most dog bites in the country, according to a recent study by State Farm Insurance.
In 2012, State Farm had 3,670 dog bite claims and paid more than $108 million as a result of dog bites. Florida accounted for 123 of the claims, coming in at number eight on the “Top 10 States for State Farm Dog Bite Claims in 2012.” On average, 500 people are bitten severely enough to require hospitalization in Florida each year. Moreover, an average of two Floridians dies due to dog bite injuries.
Studies have also found that the highest number of Florida dog bite injuries occur from April through September, with the highest number occurring in July. With this in mind, please keep the following tips in mind this summer, particularly as children are away from school and playing outside: NEVER leave a baby or small child alone with a dog. Be on the lookout for potentially dangerous situations. Start teaching young children -- including toddlers -- to be careful around pets. Children must be taught NOT to approach strange dogs. Always ask permission from a dog's owner before petting any dog.
