Pedestrian Safety Improvements Coming to Fort Myers

Florida is one of the deadliest states in the country when it comes to pedestrian accidents. In many cases, it is because our roads are designed with only cars in mind.

As Fort Myers accident attorneys, we are pleased that new pedestrian safety measures are coming to our streets. The improvements will primarily focus on Estero Boulevard, which has already seen two fatal accidents this winter.

As Wink News reports, one priority is to increase visibility at night, particularly in areas with high pedestrian traffic. For instance, streetlights will be installed near crosswalks at Red Coconut RV. Town officials are also planning to install "pedestrian islands" or "refuge spots," which will provide pedestrians with a safe place to stop in the middle of crossing the street. One will be built near the Estero Beach and Tennis Club and another near the Holiday Inn.

Until construction is completed on these improvements, Fort Myers’ officials are focusing on raising awareness among both drivers and pedestrians through the use of banners and other signage.
