Have You Taken Invokana?

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (also known as SGLT2 inhibitors) were invented to help control type 2 diabetes by helping to regulate glycemic control. SGLT2 is a natural protein that helps the kidneys reabsorb glucose, and this protein can be found in the human body. Prescription drugs like Invokana block the body’s natural reabsorption of glucose while also lowering blood glucose levels and increasing the amount of glucose that is excreted.

Invokana was approved by the FDA in 2013 and became a popular drug for the management of type 2 diabetes. Following the release of ‘Invokana’ were other brand name SGLT2 inhibitors including ‘Jardiance,’ ‘Xigduo XR,’ ‘Invokamet,’ ‘Glyxambi,’ and ‘Farxiga.’ While once believed to be an excellent way to inhibit glucose absorption, SGLT2 inhibitors can come with unwanted side-effects.

The Potential Problem With SGLT2 Inhibitors

Any of the brand name SGLT2 inhibitors listed above can cause a medical condition known as ‘diabetic ketoacidosis.’ This condition can cause heart attacks, strokes, cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, types of myocardial injuries, cardiac dysrhythmia, severe dehydration, diabetic retinopathy, and death.

When these serious potential side effects were discovered, the FDA issued a public safety warning. However, some people that have been taking the drug since its introduction in 2013 may already have experienced some of these side effects.
