The risk of a pedestrian accident is much higher after dark. In fact, almost 70 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night, according to the latest statistics from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
While drowsy driving and alcohol impairment is more prevalent at night, many pedestrian accidents are simply attributed to poor visibility. Drivers simply can’t avoid striking a pedestrian that they can’t see. With this in mind, we are very pleased that a busy stretch of Bayshore Road in North Fort Myers is getting additional lights.
The improvement project will be completed this fall, according to News-Press.com, The portion of Bayshore Road between North Tamiami Trail and Evalena Lane is dangerously dark at night. Without proper lighting, drivers are forced to rely on only their headlights to spot pedestrians. As a result, there have been 13 pedestrian crashes within five years. Five of the crashes resulted in fatalities.
