Bicyclists Face Many Possible Hazards—Including Distracted Drivers

Here in Florida, many people enjoy getting exercise by riding their bikes year-round. Some people are just out visiting neighbors or friends; others are serious bicycle enthusiasts. These bicyclists understand the risk involved when they don’t pay attention to the roads—they could hit a pothole and crash, or they could hit soft dirt or sand and come to an abrupt halt and fall off. Anyone who has ever ridden a bicycle knows this.

The real dangers tend to come when you add other people, like distracted drivers, into the mix. It’s impossible to predict what a distracted driver may do, which leads to an exponentially higher risk of injury. This is why we encourage all of our Florida bicycles to be on high alert. We’ve seen way too many accidents occur when distracted or texting drivers collide with bicyclists.

Florida Bicycle Accident Statistics

Unfun fact: Florida is the deadliest state for bicyclist (per capita) with an average of 110 deaths per year! We wish we were making that up, but don’t take our word for it, check out those alarming statistics here if you want to see if for yourself.

Florida lawmakers are attempting to help combat this growing number. While it’s not a law for adult bike riders to wear a helmet, it is a law for anyone under the age of 16 to wear a helmet. The helmet must also fit properly and be secured with a strap. However, most avid bicyclists wear helmets when riding and are advocates of doing so. If the guys who ride miles upon miles, multiple times a week are wearing them, then maybe the rest of us should be too.

“The process went very smoothly. I felt every aspect was under control and customer friendly. I would recommend Dellutri Law Group to anyone who needed an accident attorney. In fact, I have already done so, to a lady I met at rehab. Janice Kelly did an outstanding job and is an asset to the law firm. She answered all my questions in a professional and timely manner.” - J.M.
